La Salsa, con sus raices en Cuba, involucró a Colombia con la aparicion de la radio en 1929. El Mambo, Cha-cha-chá, Pachanga, Rumba, Bolero, Son Montuno y el SON CUBANO (ritmo original a la Salsa), acabarían por quedarse en la memoria y el cuerpo de por lo menos 4 generaciones de Caleños, gracias a la CMQ, Radio Progreso, Radio Habana, el disco y el cine. La cantante Celia Cruz dijo: “Salsa, es una forma diferente de nombrar la música cubana”. Los cubanos rechazaron por largo tiempo el término SALSA, aunque muchos terminarian por aceptarlo.
No importa que estos géneros musicales no hayan nacido aquí, de hecho, ningún género músical se ha producido en Cali, nunca hemos tenido una música autóctona nacida de nuestras entrañas, como sí lo podemos reconocer en otras regiones de Colombia. Estos ritmos llegaron temprano y continuan contagiando a las nuevas generaciones, tradicion que se ha mantenido por mas de 75 años.
En los años 50, en Cali, se vivia y se bailaba como Guarachero. En 1957 aparece La Feria de Cali. La Pachanga, entró con gran fuerza. Luego llegarian otros ritmos que son bien recibidos como el Swing, Rock’n Roll, Boggie Woogie, Tap, Jazz, Twist y el Tango.
Dámaso Perez Prado llegó a Cali por primera vez a principios de los años 60, a sus bailarines de Mambo se les unió una Caleña llamada Amparo Ramos Correa, a este le gustó su forma de bailar y la invitó a Mexico pero ella rehusó.
En 1968 a cambio de Tito Puente, se arriesgó a traer a la Feria a dos estrellas en ascenso: Richie Ray y Bobby Cruz, quienes estaban tocando un nuevo ritmo: El Jala Jala, fue la locura. Con ellos se afianzó el gusto por las Descargas Salseras. Ellos conocieron a la misma joven que conoció Perez Prado, sorprendidos por su destreza, la homenajearian un año despues con un tema clásico: AMPARO ARREBATO.
Cali se convertia en la Meca de los Pachangueros que se deleitaban en los “Agu’e lulos” (Cocacolos), las discotecas como El Pana, el Honka Monka, la actual Changó en Juanchito (del puente pa’lla), con los ritmos rumberos que provenían de Cuba, Puerto Rico y más adelante, Nueva York. El Boogaloo, relativamente lento y originario de Nueva York, llegó en 1969 en LP’s de 33 RPM, un DJ de la discoteca Village Game lo aceleró a 45 y esto fue excelente para que se animaran a interpretarlo con los pies.
En los años 70 llegan a Cali, La Fania All Stars, contando entre sus estrellas al Cantante de los Cantantes: Hector Lavoe quien llegó a vivir en Cali durate 6 meses. En 1974, el politico y periodista Cubano José Pardo Llada, residente en Cali desde 1963, creó un Campeonato Mundial de Salsa, donde le entregaron el primer lugar y la fama a los Caleños Watuzi y María, compitiendo contra Cubanos y Puertorriqueños. Rolando La Serie, intérprete de Las Cuarenta, participó como jurado.
En los años 80 surge el estereotipo creado por la farándula radial y el show business, y se afianzó el eslogan: CALI CAPITAL MUNDIAL DE LA SALSA, Movimiento cultural que se venia formando desde hacia 20 años atrás, exsaltado en la proliferación de discotecas, la Feria de Cali, la radio, los bailes populares, la pasion por los ritmos cubanos, el gusto por la historia musical, los encuentros internacionales de coleccionistas, el surgimiento de unas 100 orquestas, se convirtio en la memoria mas importante de la Salsa, y por supuesto ya que en ningun otro lugar del planeta se bailaba tanta Salsa como en Cali,
Cali dejó de ser, desde hace varios años y por muchas razones, la Capital Mundial de la Salsa, debido a la invasión de géneros musicales EXTRAÑOS a la idiosincrasia Caleña, como el Merengue, el Vallenato y finalmente el Reggeaton. En honor a la verdad, el decaimiento de la Salsa no es solamente un asunto en Cali.
EL ESTILO CALEÑO se caracteriza por su velocidad, por marcar con los pies todos los instrumentos musicales y por sus espectaculares figuras acrobaticas fue incluido en la Division CABARET. Este original estilo, unico en el mundo salsero, REPRESENTA NUESTRO FOLKLOR CITADINO; se ha convertido en un sano deporte, de arte, presicion, destreza y competencia entre las 80 academias de baile. Se ha ganado el respeto y la admiracion en los Campeonatos Mundiales. Es visto por los amantes de la Salsa como: LA BELLA PERLA ESCONDIDA. Nació de una mezcla de ritmos Afro-Colombianos, Twist, Boogaloo, Rock’n Roll, Tango, Tap, Mambo, Swing, Pachanga, Foxtrot y Descargas Salseras.
A las 80 academias de baile y sus cinco mil bailarines, se les debe reconocer que asumieron el honor de defender la Salsa en Cali y lo hacen con inteligencia, porque TRABAJAN DESDE LA INFANCIA, de manera que la Salsa está viva en Cali, en sus raíces. En Cali tambien se celebra un Festival Mundial de Salsa cada Septiembre.
Este proyecto esta dedicado con mucho cariño a TODOS LOS NIÑOS SALSEROS DEL MUNDO y principalmente a los de Cali. No dejemos que los nuevos generos musicales la sepulten en la historia: QUE VIVA LA SALSA.
