I love all the …
I love all the wanna-be teachers’ flame posts of anthony. hilarious. i’m a ballroom dance teacher and competitor, and whenever I have a question about contemporary club latin moves, i consult senor persaud. He teaches relevant and approachable steps in a perfectly clear and concise manner, while staying true to the flavor of the salsa. bravo.

Anthony, I have been enjoying your videos. Great stuff. Can you tell me where one can learn more about the music and the rythim in salsa to be able to dance and feel the music better. Can you do a video regarding the beat, the timing and the instrumentation.

It is not only …
It is not only about watching videos. It is really about learning about salsa music, the instruments (conga, clave, timbales..etc), how it is arranged, what to listen for in a song…etc.
Every instrument plays a part in the rhythm that helps you play with the music as well with your partner. And after that you will come to appreciate salsa music in a much deeper way. (and you’ll enjoy it much more!)

Hi johsy, I looked …
Hi johsy, I looked at a video of you dancing. You are very smooth, but you should be counting. In a video, you are stepping to the Frankie Ruiz (La Cura), you are not stepping on the beats in the song correctly, specifically the clave in the song. Latino or not everyone should count when in doubt. I’m from Puerto Rico and I still count when I need to (in my head) to make sure my lead is perfect for the follow.

now i guess at some point you dont count anymore and timing comes out naturally, right?

You don’t need to …
You don’t need to count as long as you are on the correct timing and on beat. Most people are off-time (even if they really think they are dancing to the music) because they don’t understand how the timing and instrumentation of salsa. I recommend counting – there is NO WORSE dancer than one who is without timing.

The 4 and the 8 are …
The 4 and the 8 are pauses in the music. In general, it makes it less confusing to dancers by only counting on the times that one actually steps.
